Alevism:
- no dogma's, no prophecies, no 'holy' books, no conversions, no feelings of superiority...
- the 'divine nature' of mankind instead of a 'God' outside mankind...
- pantheistic, mystic (example, an inner form of Islam), oneness of religions, Mother Nature...
- humanistic: the human being as the centre, decentness, self-determination, equality of sexes...
- cultural and progressive: science, music, dance, literature...
- social: fellow man, Unity in Diversity...
- progressive supporters: social-democratic, liberal, progressive, separation of Religion and State...

    Welcome

Welcome to the website of the cultural association Pir Sultan Abdal.

We are an alevism based cultural association in Enschede, the Netherlands (the largest eastern Dutch city, near the German border). Our aim is to maintain and propagate the age-old alevi culture. Our association is founded, managed by and especially meant for alevis, but everybody with interest can participate in our activities and can make use of our (cultural) facilities.

Our association is named after the legendary Pir Sultan Abdal, a 16th century anatolian alevi singer, poet, mystic and resistance fighter. In those days Pir Sultan Abdal payed with his life for his resistance activities against the cruelty of the then Ottoman rulers. The poems of Pir Sultan Abdal however has been passed from generation to generation in the alevi oral tradition and are nowadays a constant source of inspiration for Turkish musicians, writers and artists. The logo on the upper left of this page is a visual edited picture of Pir Sultan Abdal's monument, located in the city of Hacibektaş (Central-Anatolia, Turkey).

The great anatolian alevi humanist, mystic and Saint Haci Bektasi Veli (13th century) once posed "the path that does not go through science is a dark one". Unknown, unloved. As no other we know what is meant to be stigmatized, oppressed and to be persecuted. By way of this website we would like to acquaint you with our association and Alevism. If you have questions after visting these pages, please do not hesitate asking for further information.
